In front of a packed house at the new DukeDome the Wellington Dukes picked up right where they left off from the old DukeDome as they defeated the Whitby Fury by a score of 3 to 1. The game was preceded by a fantastic opening ceremony which included acknowledgement of many former great Duke players.
Zach Blake will go into the record books as the player to have scored the very first goal at the new arena as the Dukes capitalized on the powerplay at 4:40 of the opening period. Brian Bunnett and Steve Evans drew the assists. Darcy Murphy increased the lead to 2-0 in the middle period on a great set-up from Bunnett and Curtis Leonard just as a Fury player stepped out of the penalty box. The Fury made it close in the final frame when they scored to close the lead by one only to see Evans score the clincher with a minute to go from Brendon Barletta and Sean Rudy.
Jordan Ruby recorded his 17th win in net (just one regulation loss in 22 games)facing 28 shots on the night and continues to lead the league in both GAA (1.78) and Save %(.944).
Players, staff, volunteers, billets and supporters were treated to a wonderful Christmas dinner following the game as some of the boys will be going home for the first time in over 4 months during the OJHL break.
The Dukes will kick off the 2011 portion of their schedule with first a game against Russia's Red Stars on January 4th and then the Kingston Voyageurs come to town on January 7th. For a complete listing of all Dukes games please click on the "SCHEDULE" link above.
