Despite a slow start to the 2017 portion of their schedule, the Wellington Dukes were able to rebound and steal away a 6-3 victory over the Newmarket Hurricanes on Thursday night.

After a scoreless first 15 minutes of the first period, the Hurricanes managed to notch goals 2:30 apart from Mackenzie Gray (jamming home a loose puck in front) and Quinn Yule (converting on an odd-man rush). The 2-0 lead would hold into the second period, where things looked fairly bleak for the Dukes. Brody Morris took a cross-checking penalty to put his team down a man. However, that would not deter the rest of the group. Brayden Stortz would cross over the Newmarket blueline and blast home his 23rd goal of the season past netminder Jesse Hodgson to cut the defecit in half. The shorthanded marker was to be the only tally of the period, as the Hurricanes continued to lead heading into the third.

The Dukes would eventually explode in that third stanza for five goals, including four of them unaswered from Carter Allen, Stortz, Rory Milne and Jackson Arcan. After Joseph Mizzi cut down the Dukes lead to two, Brent House deflected a Hunter Gunski point shot in to close out the scoring and complete the win.

Wellington's great effort on this night was staked by multi-point games from six different players, including Stortz (who bumped his league leading point total to 60 in this game), Arcan, Milne, Gunski, Mitchell Martan and Brett Schaefer. Connor Ryckman also shook the first period cobwebs out and bounced back to make 25 saves in his 19th individual win of the season against his old team, the Hurricanes.

The Dukes improve to 20-12-1-2 on the season with the victory and are still tied with Kingston for fourth in the East division with 42 points following the Voyageurs win over Pickering. Wellington will welcome in the same team that ended 2016 to the Duke Dome to ring in the 2017 home part of the schedule – the Markham Royals – on Friday night. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
