The Wellington Dukes strong 2016-17 campaign came to an end Saturday night in a 4-2 loss to the Cobourg Cougars.
The Dukes got off to a strong start over five minutes in on a Carter Allen solo rush, but Quinn Syridiuk knotted the score at a goal apiece off a faceoff from Matt Busby to even the game.
An Evan Foley slashing penalty early in the second led to markers from Spencer Roberts and Matthew Carroll and turned the momentum in Cobourg's favour. Colin Doyle got the Dukes back within one from Brody Morris and Brayden Stortz 6-and-a-half minutes into the third, but Connor MacEachern's late unassisted tally polished off the RBC Cup hosts' series win and a birth in the Northeast Conference Final against the Trenton Golden Hawks.
Connor Ryckman continued his stellar goaltending right up to the end in his final junior game, making 34 saves in the loss. Stefano Durante turned aside 32 shots for the victory.
The Dukes will send off to their summer after a second straight appearance in the semi-final and look forward to evaluation camp in May in preperation for the 2017-18 season.
