Wellington's Yuill brothers — Cameron and Alex — won men's hockey honours during the 2016-17 University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) varsity sports awards banquet held recently in Oshawa.

Cameron Yuill, 25, was named Ridgebacks MVP while Alex Yuill, 21, won Defensive Player of the Year accolades.

Cameron Yuill finished second in team scoring at the conclusion of the 2016-17 OUA season with 23 points in 28 games (seven goals, 16 assists). His totals included one shorthanded goal and one game-winner.

In the OUA playoffs, the six-foot fifth-year centre picked up one assist in three games. A season highlight for Yuill included an invitation to the 40-player selection camp for Team Canada at the World University Games in Kazahstan.

Alex Yuill scored once and tacked on eight assists for nine points in 28 games for the Ridgebacks during the regular campaign while drawing just 10 penalty minutes. His lone goal came on the power play.

In the post-season, the five-foot-eight sophomore rearguard earned one helper in three games.

Both Yuill brothers are studying communications at UOIT.

Alex Yuill is a former Belleville Bull, playing more than 100 career OHL games for the club following a trade during the 2013-14 season from the Barrie Colts. Yuill had 5-26-31 scoring totals in 104 games as a Bull.

Cameron Yuill played for his hometown Jr. A Wellington Dukes from 2008-12, including career highs of 13 goals and 37 points in his final OJHL campaign in 2011-12. He went on to play 109 career games at UOIT, compiling overall scoring totals of 22-56-78 over five OUA seasons with the Ridgebacks.

UOIT finished with a 16-11-1 regular-season record in 2016-17, then lost 2-1 to the Concordia Stingers in a best-of-three OUA East Division first-round playoff series.
