A perfect weekend was in the cards for the Wellington Dukes, capped off by a 4-2 doubling of the Aurora Tigers on Sunday at Lehigh Arena.
The Dukes fourth straight win and third in as many days after victories of 8-2 and 7-4 over Cobourg and Lindsay, respectively, propelled them forward in a jumbled OJHL East Conference picture to 26 points with a 13-8 record.
Scoring depth highlighted the first period, with heavy hitter Quinn McNamara opening the scoring at 8:23 by depositing home a massive rebound off a Ronen McFarlane shot past Matthew Humphries for his second of the season.
Michael Piao buried a rebound in the slot on the powerplay, but that was answered 32 seconds later by McFarlane’s first career goal in junior hockey on a shot from the left boards that hit an Aurora player and bounced in.
Sacha Trudel and Zach Carrier drew the assists on the go-ahead marker at 11:25.
A competitive second frame resulted in only one goal from the visitors, a Liam Longo powerplay strike to even the score again, setting up for a tossup third period.
Past the halfway point of the third period, Latreille eluded a couple of Tiger defenders and finessed a pass through the edge of the crease for a pinching Riley Noble, who found the net for his third of the season to put Wellington ahead for good.
Cory Jewitt received a Trudel pass off the glass and dove past a Tiger to knock in an empty-netter with a minute left and help Wellington salt away the victory.
Newcomer Jacob Brown was once again solid between the pipes with 30 saves in his second straight start. Wellington outshot Aurora 36-32.
The Dukes will hit the road next on Thursday to face off with the Haliburton County Huskies at 7 p.m. at SG Nesbitt Memorial Arena.
